Seven peer-reviewed publications, and a Ph.D. on a question that touches every internet user.
The internet is many independent networks that exchange routes through a protocol called BGP. When a link fails, the news travels from router to router until every network agrees on a new path, a moment called convergence. Until then, data can be delayed or lost.
For his Ph.D. at RMIT University, Dr. Hamad analyzed this slowdown and proposed MultiState-BGP, an SDN-based way to manage gateways between multiple domains and counter convergence delays.
The news hops from router to router, and networks try alternatives before they settle.
A controller sees the whole network and steers the gateways to the new path together.
